This expansion project produced a 21,800 sf addition to BioMarin’s main commercial manufacturing facility. Work required the roof of the existing high-bay warehouse be partially removed to allow space for the new ground-up three-story addition. This project included significant structural and civil scope elements such as drilled piers, shotcrete walls, pier caps, slab on grade, structural steel frame, plaster exterior, HVAC, electrical and process piping and Utilities. The new facility is located adjacent to an existing production facility with multiple qualified shared utilities. All tie-ins required extensive coordination and implementation during the annual facility shutdown. The adjacent manufacturing facility remained fully operational throughout construction.

The new facility houses several large process tanks with access platforms and stacked bin storage for buffer and media prep, a high-bay cell culture space designed for future scale-up, a glasswash suite, multiple cold storage rooms, and filtration, purification, and formulation suites. HVAC systems to support the classified clean spaces fill the new roof.

Project was delivered MEP Design-Build utilizing BIM 3D design technology. All MEP elements were fully coordinated with Autodesk Navisworks. During the 13 month construction duration, over 175,000 field labor hours were expended without any lost time safety incident. .
